How To Get Your Significant Other Motivated

Having your spouse as part of your fitness lifestyle can take your own levels of fitness to a new level.
Imagine that you go to the gym and workout and are around 100% intensity.
Now imagine that you BOTH go to the gym and workout and are around 100% intensity and it carries over into other aspects of your life (sleeping, eating, etc).
It's difficult when you are into working out and your spouse may not share the same levels of commitment or joys. Talk about frustrating too! You see beyond just you and her but to your daughter as well having parents around later in life that are healthy.
What's worse is that your daughter may make the choice later to NOT to active even though you are very active. It's easier if the whole family moves as a single unit.
I've seen several articles written on spousal support in the gym.
* some love it as it's an extension of themselves * others don't like it as they want to do it on their own
Obviously you are walking a delicate line. You want to get your spouse involved in fitness in some capacity. You also know she doesn't like exercise in general (my mom was the same way).
The key is…
To make exercise fun!
Let me explain…
You see, a lot of us find that bench pressing a lot of weight is fun. It makes us feel good. We get sore and we love it. That's fun. At least to me.
But there's many people who find that really boring. Pointless. And not so fun.
In that case, you've got to simply find something that's 'exercise' but fun as well.
Walking, jogging, basketball, tennis, family Frisbee day, trail hiking…
Thing that involve one thing and only one thing….
ACTIVITY!
Get her active in some way without going full blown into a gym and hitting the weights and cardio machines.
There's so many levels of fitness that don't involve weights and cardio equipment. But they all involve movement and activity.
Over the last few years, I've received hundreds of questions about nutrition. Either it's a spouse looking to eat better and he's outnumbered at home or a teen who wants to eat better but his/her parents aren't into it.
The #1 problem with this is…
You may be looking for the other person(s) to take on your healthy lifestyle.
The reason they don't is that it's so easy to make bad choices today (fast food, tv dinners, quick eats).
The #1 solution to the problem is…
COOK for the family.
If you step up and do the shopping and eliminate most of the junk foods and start preparing meals, she'll be literally forced to eat better because you are supplying the effort. The effort to cook, shop and prepare is really a big reason why people eat poorly. Nobody wants to spend the time to do it.
Rather than look to her to join you in this nutritional quest, simply take over and offer to help, shop and cook.
If you start cooking well enough, it will taste quite good and she won't mind at all.
Many people would gladly eat healthy meals if they tasted good and were prepared for them.
As in the case of the teenagers who are looking to their parents to help them with their lifestyles or the spouse who wishes their significant other would eat better…
What nobody does is simply…
TAKE OVER!
You wouldn't be putting her on any diet. You'd simply be eating better.
If it's important to you, then you must do it. And while you're at it, cook a portion for her as well. She'll probably NOT want to invest the effort to cook her own meals if they are already done for her.
So there you have it…
First, find any activity you both can enjoy on a basic level. No guilt. No pushing. Just being active. Let's see if it progresses.
Second, learn all you can about nutrition and eating properly for life (no diets). And shop and cook. Make portions for her. Chances are, she'll just accept it and eat what you are eating because it's there. Find recipes that make healthy foods taste better.
Third, you can throw in subtle hints about how great she looks. What most men do is…
Bring down their wife's self-esteem in an effort to make them better themselves.
As you point out the unhealthy ways, you won't make her suddenly jump from the couch to the gym.
You'll just bring any motivation she had to a screeching halt.
So compliment her. Make her feel good. People who feel good move forward. People who feel bad, usually hide and become depressed.
Do the opposite of what most men would do in this situation.
That is, tell her how GREAT she is, how good she looks and maybe she'll come around to hanging out with you more during your activity.
If you take the usual approach and tell her she needs to workout and she's eating poorly, she'll probably not respond in a positive manner.

Instead of New Year’s Resolutions, Set S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goals

Why do new year's resolutions usually fail? Why do you start with guns blazing on January 1st, but by February, you're losing motivation, cheating on your diet, skipping workouts, and slipping back into old patterns? John LaValle, a master trainer of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) suggests that we should take a closer look at the meaning behind the word "Resolution." Being derived from the word "re-solve," it really means "to solve again." And isn't that exactly what happens? You solve the same problem again and again, year after year?

You know what I'm talking about… That 20 pounds you lost last year, and promptly gained it right back… you are now resolving to take it off again aren't you? The very nature of the word resolution implies gaining it back again.

Suggestion: don't make resolutions. Set SMARTER goals.

Resolutions aren't real goals. They're more like wishes, and wishes are wishy-washy. A wish becomes a goal the moment you put it in writing. When you write your goals in a certain way, following scientific principles of success psychology, you'll skyrocket your chances of getting what you want this year… and keeping it.

One of the most tried and true methods for goal achievement is the SMART goals formula. If you searched the net for SMART goals, you would probably find a dozen different variations on the SMART goal acronym. Here's my version of SMART goals, along with a little extra to make them even SMART-ER.

1. Specific. Set goals with clarity. Your mind does not respond well to vague generalities. If you say your goal is to lose weight and then you lose one pound, then you've reached your goal. Is that what you really wanted? Get clear. Be precise. Be specific.

2. Measurable. Set goals that can be quantified in measurable units such as pounds, body fat percentage, lean body mass, inches and clothing sizes. Performance goals can include strength (lbs or kilos lifted) and repetitions completed. Don't forget to include health goals as well, such as blood pressure and blood lipids.

3. Accountable. Set goals you can be held accountable to. First be accountable to yourself by using a weekly progress chart, a daily nutrition diary and a training journal. Then double your motivation with external accountability and submit your results and journals to someone else who will hold you to your commitments.

4. Realistic.
Set goals that are attainable and maintainable. If you lose two pounds of fat per week, you are doing awesome. 30 pounds in 30 days sounds great in the advertisements, but it is not typical, and rapid weight loss is likely to consist of muscle and water, not fat, and is nearly impossible to maintain.

5. Time Bound. Set goals with deadlines. Time limits are highly motivating. With no time limit, there is no urgency for completion. Set goals for daily workouts and nutrition, weekly weight and body composition and 12 week changes in weight, body fat or measurements. Set long term goals as well for one year, five years and even beyond. For all time periods, be certain that your deadline is realistic.
Success Story!
Now we add some motivational ooompf for this year by making your goals even SMART-ER!

6. Emotional. Goals give you a direction, but strong emotions are the propulsion system that drives you in that direction. Build up a burning desire by focusing on the emotional reasons why you want to achieve your goal. Connect your goals to your values. What's most important to you about reaching your goal? If you reach 9% body fat, or whatever is your target, what will that do for you? What will your life look like then? How will it make you FEEL?

7. Reviewed often. Resolutions fail because they are casually set once at the beginning of the year and easily forgotten. Stay laser-focused by writing and reading your goals every day. Repetition is one of the keys to re-programming your mental computer for success. Use the goal card technique. Write your single most important body or fitness goal on a small card, then carry it with you every where you go, reading it several times a day.

S.M.A.R.T.E.R. GOALS is a simple, memorable formula for goal setting and goal getting. It may not be new, but then again, there are no new fundamentals. Methods and tactics may change, but scientific principles of success never change. And don't forget to make your goals even smarter this year. A goal that's not strongly desired and kept in front of you every day will be forgotten. Stay focused, eat right, train hard and expect success!

"A goal that is casually set and lightly taken will be freely abandoned at the first obstacle." – Zig Ziglar, Motivational Speaker<<< Watch This Amazing Video For More Information >>>

New HIIT Research: A Practical Model For High Intensity Interval Training

High intensity interval training, also known as HIIT, has become immensely popular in the last decade. HIIT involves alternating brief bursts of very high intensity exercise (work intervals) with brief segments of lower intensity exercise (recovery intervals). One problem with some types of HIIT is that they call for such high intensity bursts – literally all out sprints – that they're not practical for everyone, and possibly not even safe for older or overweight individuals. A recent study out of McMaster University has tested a protocol for HIIT that produces impressive results in a short period of time without the need for "all-out" sprints…

Many of the previous studies on HIIT used ALL-OUT intervals on a specialized cycle ergometer, pedaling against a high resistance.

This type of training takes a high level of commitment and motivation and can result in feelings of severe discomfort and even nausea.

One of my colleagues mentioned in our Burn the Fat Forums that he remembers exercise physiology class in college where they did all out cycle ergometer interval sprint testing and nearly everyone either puked or passed out.

The Tabata protocol for example, is a brief but brutal 4 minute HIIT workout often spoken of by trainers and trainees alike with both appreciation and dread. It's no walk in the park.

The truth is, some HIIT protocols which have been tested in the lab to produce big improvements in cardiovascular function and conditioning in a short period of time, may not be practical or safe, especially for beginners, obese or older adults.

In this new study out of McMaster University, a HIIT protocol that was more practical and attainable for the general population was tested to see how the results would compare to the more "brutal" very short, but extremely intense types of HIIT.

Here's what the new HIIT protocol looked like:

Study duration: 2 weeks
Frequency: 3 sessions per week (mon, wed, fri)
Work intervals: 60 seconds @ constant load
Intensity Work intervals: "high intensity cycling at a workload that corresponded to the peak power achieved at the end of the ramp VO2peak test (355 +/- 10W)"
Recovery intervals: 75 seconds
Intensity Recovery Intervals: Low intensity cycling at 30W"
Rounds: 8-12 intervals
Progression: 8 intervals 1st two workouts, 10 intervals second two workouts, 12 intervals last 2 workouts.
Warm up: 3 min:
Duration of work intervals: 8-12 minutes
Total time spent: 21-29 minutes.

Results: In just 2 weeks, there were significant improvements in functional exercise performance and skeletal muscle adaptations (mitochondrial biogenesis). Subjects did not report any dizziness, nausea, light headedness that is often reported with all-out intervals.

They concluded that HIIT does not have to be all-out to produce significant fitness improvements and yet the total weekly time investment could remain under 1 hour.

On a personal note, I REALLY like this kind of interval training: 60 second work intervals repeated 8-12 times. Here's why:

Body composition was not measured in this study, but I believe that enough energy expenditure can be achieved with 20-30 minutes of this style of interval training to make significant body comp improvements in addition to all the cardiovascular conditioning improvements.

That's another problem with super-brief and super intense HIIT programs: The cardio and heart benefits are amazing, but you can only burn so many calories per minute, no matter how intensely you work. To call a 4-minute workout a "good fat burner" in the absolute sense is ridiculous.

Somewhere in between long duration slow/moderate steady state cardio and super short super-intense HIIT lies a sweet spot for fat-burning benefits… a place where intensity X duration yield an optimal total calorie expenditure at a reasonable time investment. Perhaps this 20-30 minute HIIT workout is it?

If you've read any of my other articles on cardio, you'll know that I'm not against steady state cardio, walking or even light recreational exercise and miscellaneous activity as part of a fat loss program. All activity counts towards your total daily energy expenditure, and in fact, the little things often add up during the day more than you would imagine (just look up N.E.A.T. and see what you find).

But for your formal "cardio training" sessions, if you're going to use traditional cardio modes (stationary cycle, etc.) and if your goal includes fat burning, and if your time is limited, then this type of HIIT is a great choice and you can now say it is research proven…

Not to mention… the excuse, "I don't have enough time" has been officially busted!<<< Watch This Amazing Video For More Information >>>

Ovarian Cysts: Symptoms and Diagnosis

Ovarian cyst is a common gynecological problem that can affect any woman at any stage of life. This chronic disease is difficult to diagnose at times, as the symptoms are not always apparent. However, it is essential to correctly diagnosis your ovarian cysts condition and map the symptoms of the disease to ensure proper treatment. The earlier you diagnose the condition the better are your changes of recovery. To accurately diagnose ovarian cysts, you need to be well versed with the symptoms of this condition.

Diagnosis of ovarian cysts:

Ovarian cysts are usually diagnosed by the gynecologist on the basis of the patient's symptoms and an array of tests. Sometimes, ovarian cysts come to light only during a routine medical or pelvic examination as ovarian cysts may continue to exist without any symptoms. A woman suffering from ovarian cysts must pay close attention to the following symptoms, which are generally associated with this condition.

    1. Irregular menstruation: Irregular menstruation signals the fact that all is not well with your gynecological health. Women suffering from ovarian cysts may suffer from amenorrhea, heavy bleeding, light bleeding etc. Hence, any menstrual irregularity or abnormality should be checked out immediately.
    2. Pelvic pain: Ovarian cysts can cause severe pelvic pain before during and after menstruation. Many women suffering from ovarian cyst also experience pain during sexual intercourse.
    3. Bladder related problem: Cysts may put pressure on the bladder. This can lead to difficulty in emptying the bladder. Women also experience a frequent urge to urinate. Often, emptying the bladder can also prove to be a difficult ordeal.
    4. Infertility: Many women approach a gynecologist, when they fail to conceive. Ovarian cysts may significantly hinder your fertility. Often, miscarriages are also possible because of the complications associated with untreated ovarian cysts.
    5. Other symptoms: Ovarian cysts may cause nausea, breathlessness, abdominal pain, vomiting and general discomfort. Pregnancy like symptoms are also common. Note that any prolonged pain should be checked out immediately.

It is essential to understand that not all the symptoms above are experienced by women suffering from ovarian cysts. Some of these symptoms may not be associated with ovarian cysts at all. Therefore, it is always best to get a complete medical diagnosis by a professional before starting a proper treatment.

Tests:

There is a variety of tests which can be held by your gynecologist to correctly diagnose your condition. A few of these include blood tests, pelvic examination, ultrasound, a simple pregnancy test and more. These tests aid in adequate ovarian cysts diagnosis and rule out other possible complications.

The only way to effectively treat and prevent ovarian cysts is by using a multidimensional holistic approach to healing.

Unlike the conventional approach which deals with the inflicted organ or with the symptoms of the disease (and the treatment in often aggressive with a myriad of side effects), the holistic approach treats every disease as part of a whole by firstly restoring natural balance to the body while naturally tackling each causative factor which lead to the condition. In this way, the holistic approach to treating ovarian cysts offers a long term, safe and gentle solution without the side effects of drugs or the risk of surgery while ensuring the prevention of future ovarian cyst recurrence.

Save Money Using Home Remedies For Hair Fall

There are a lot of people out there making a lot of money because other people are losing their hair. Commercial hair loss remedies are some of the most expensive products you can buy. Here is a well-kept secret you should know: You can have much better success and spend substantially less money if you choose the home remedy route.

Industry Hype

Do not give into the industry hype about home and natural remedies. They will spend millions of dollars trying to convince you these options do not work.

The fact is these companies would not have to spend so much money running down home therapies for hair loss if their alternatives offered real success.

If the manufacturers of hair loss products had undeniable statistics or if they had countless people wanting to stand up and show how they reversed hair fall using that product, there would be no contest. If they had that, everyone would choose those products over any other alternative.

However, they do not have undeniable proof. In fact, they do not even have proof acceptable by any logical person willing to read the fine print. Instead, they have statistics filled with obscure terms like "appeared to re-grow hair" or "felt better about their appearance".

They prey on your fear of hair loss. They tell you spending thousands of dollars a year is the only way to fix it but then do not provide any results. This is not how hair fall home remedies work.

The Alternative To Hype

You do not see advertisements for home remedies. You do not read paid promotions in magazines for hair fall control home remedies.

Instead, you stumble across a discussion board or happen to run into someone who tells you about the amazing natural home remedy they used which cured their hair loss and even helped them re-grow hair.

Normally, you have to go seek out home remedies. This might be the only drawback to using these alternatives; they are like well kept secrets. Keep in mind, just because you are not inundated with brand names it does not mean they are not effective.

The principle behind hair fall remedies is simple. Use basic, wholesome ingredients and natural techniques to restore your hair.

Restore your health internally to stop the problem which made your hair fall out and to promote growth of new hair. Restore the health of your scalp to nurture the hair follicles back to a growing state.

This is the main reason why home remedies for hair fall are so superior to their industrial alternatives. The commercial options only tackle one part of this solution.

Most offer some form of topical treatment, shampoo, cream, or other ointment applied to the scalp. While the chemicals in these products do more harm than good, the product's goal is to nurture the scalp.

However, nurturing the scalp cannot stop hair loss alone. You have to also treat the problem internally.

On the other hand, products, such as hair loss supplements, which are supposed to restore health internally, do not achieve the dual goal of also nurturing the scalp.

This is the pitfall of all commercial hair loss products; it essentially ensures they will never work for anyone.

Hair fall home remedies are completely different. They achieve the two goals at once. This sets home remedy alternatives apart from any other hair loss strategy.

Saving Money

These logical goals of a hair loss home remedy are achieved using the simplest of tools. Household items like vitamin supplements and fresh vegetables are integrated into a healing nutrition plan.

Next, lifestyle changes, like increasing activity throughout the day, are added to the equation.

Finally, simple but effective topical ointments are made from common ingredients like green tea and tea tree oil, which stimulate healing and growth on the scalp.

The plan is designed to both correct health problems which lead to hair loss and give the hair follicle the nourishment it needs to produce strong, lasting hair. It is a detailed plan. It is extremely effective at curing hair fall. However, it does not really cost anything extra.

Making smart decisions for your hair and your body should not cost extra. The hair loss industry knows this, which is why they spend millions trying to convince you otherwise. When it comes to curing hair loss, as with most things, the simplest solution is the right one.

It is time to move past all the industry hype. You can stop your hair loss without expensive and often toxic chemicals, using a holistic approach like the Hair Loss Black Book. Its unique plan incorporates the very best of home remedy philosophies, such as reshaping your body into an ideal form of health, while nurturing your scalp with nutrient rich therapies, to cure hair fall once and for all.

Review of Vince Delmonte’s Six-Pack Quest

If you try to keep yourself up-to-date about the latest developments and strategies in the world of fitness and strength training, then you've probably heard of Vince DelMonte. Vince is one of the industry's greatest resources, sharing his experiences and wealth of knowledge through his website, books and training programs. This time around Vince has developed a book entitled

No-Nonsense Six-Pack, which includes his strategies for developing the perfect abs.

There's hardly a man on the planet who doesn't want to have the perfect six-pack abs. Who doesn't want to take off his shirt and show off a lean, ripped mid-section? The fitness industry knows this and understands that there's lots of money to be made by promoting all sorts of pills, programs and gadgets to help guys develop the 'perfect six-pack.' The problem though, is that most of them are promoting a magic bullet that promises to almost instantly–and without any effort at all–give you the midsection you've always wanted. Not surprisingly, they don't work.

With No-Nonsense, Vince has taken a different approach. He's not promising a magical overnight solution. And if you're looking for an easy, no-effort program then you should probably look elsewhere because Vince expects you to work for your results–just like he did, and does. In fact, Vince opens the book by saying that your quest for the perfect six-pack could be the toughest challenge you'll ever face.

The first chapter presents a discussion of 15 reasons why the average guy will not achieve his dream of having six-pack abs. It's interesting that most of the reasons that guys fail to obtain perfect six-pack abs stem from the fact that they don't pay enough attention to the mental component of the ab-building strategy. This is critical because the mental aspect of the quest formulates the foundation for everything you do afterwards.

In chapter two, Vince presents a framework for developing a motivational plan to keep you on track. Again, this is a complete departure from the magic bullet approaches, because unlike most ab programs, Vince actually expects you to work for your results. You'll find a lot of great motivators in this section. In the following chapter, he begins to outline the training plan, which is comprised of three cornerstones:

1) create a caloric deficit; 2) increase the metabolic cost of each circuit; and 3) increase the metabolic demand of each workout.

This section is followed by a discussion of the No-Nonsense training principles. For example, while most training programs have you focus on the number of reps, rest periods, tempo or number of sets, Vince believes that it's more important to focus on Intensity, Concentration and Exertion of effort (ICE). The rest of the chapter includes explanations of his other training principles. If you've read any of Vince's other works, then you'll be familiar with these.

Next up is the Cardio Plan. Staying true to his style, Vince provides the reader with information and strategies that aren't part of the typical fat reduction cardio programs you see being marketed today. As an example, he talks about a study that showed that fat burning actually increased when participants did two 30-minute sessions with a break in between versus one continuous 60-minute session.

Developing your own personal six-pack abs nutritional plan is the focus of chapter five. Here, he presents a really interesting approach to nutrition, using what he calls his 'Elimination Plan.' Foods are ranked from 'F' to 'A' with 'F' being the worst foods and 'A' being the best. Pay close attention to this section because it contains some surprises. Also, just like in the rest of the plan, to follow his nutritional approach, Vince expects you to do some work and be accountable if you want to see results. You'll need to calculate your daily caloric intake and take on some other responsibilities as well.

Chapter six provides a nice overview of the No-Nonsense approach to supplementation and chapter seven offers up some tips on living the six-pack lifestyle. Here again Vince doesn't disappoint. He provides excellent, fact-based information and strategies that are overlooked by most other fitness authors. And I don't know about everyone else but personally, I like to work for my results. When I've worked hard at something and achieve my goal, I get an incredible sense of satisfaction. More important, achieving the goal means so much more since it's something that I've really put my efforts into it and persevered to get the results I want. So if that's the kind of guy you are, then Vince's No-Nonsense Six-Pack is probably the right program for you.

Stop Cravings and Stop Binge Eating: Advice from a Pizza Man

In a surprising comment made during a popular UK radio show, the founder of one of the largest Pizza chains in the United States and United Kingdom told listeners not to eat too much pizza!

In an interview with host Adam Shaw on BBC's Radio Four program, John Schnatter, the founder of Papa John's pizza, was asked whether he was concerned about the British government's recent actions in the fast food restaurant business to help put the brakes on obesity.

Schnatter said, "Pizza is actually healthy for you if you don't eat too much of it. You can't eat five or six slices but if you eat one or two slices it's very nutritious."

Laughing, Shaw replied, "I'm not sure your investors would want to hear you tell people, 'don't eat too much of our pizzas!"'

Across the web, bloggers and tweeters have been putting in their two cents. Some say he was a little TOO honest. Others say this was either the worst PR screw up ever… or the best PR move ever (you know what they say about "bad" publicity).

Although I wouldn't call pizza health food, I think his advice to eat pizza, but only in moderation was the responsible thing for a fast food owner to do at a time where obesity is reaching epidemic proportions, not just in the United States but in the U.K. and other countries as well.

Moreover, it was just plain good diet advice! One reason people are failing to control their weight is because of all-or-none thinking, i.e, "I can't eat ANY pizza EVER again!" or, "I have to follow my diet 100% or not at all." Success Story!

In my experience, all or none thinking is one of the biggest causes of diet failure. It's far better from a psychological perspective to eat your pizza; simply enjoy it infrequently and in small quantities.

Think of you on a diet like a pressure cooker on a burner. The longer you keep that pot on the heat, the more the steam pressure builds up inside. If there's no outlet or release valve on that thing, eventually the pressure builds up so much that even if it's made of steel and the lid is bolted down, she's gonna blow, sooner or later.

Well, in the beginning, you might think your willpower is made of steel and that you're bolted tigher than a submarine hatch, but the longer you're on a diet with no relief, the greater the pressure builds up until YOU blow your top… and that means massive binge eating.

But if you let off a little steam in the form of a "free meal" (or two) and enjoy that slice of pizza (or whatever is your favorite 'poison') on occasion, that relieves the pressure. Alas, you never even feel the urge to binge… because you HAD your pizza and the urge was satisfied. Since the meal was planned and you kept the calories under control, it had little or no effect on your fat loss results.

This topic of conversation was prompted on the BBC radio show during a discussion about how the Pizza business was doing during the recession and about efforts to stem the growing obesity crisis in the UK.

Earlier last month, The Food Standards Agency in the UK started negotiating with UK food, pub and sandwich chains to display calories on their menus to try to provide education about healthier options for consumers who eat out frequently.

The move is similar to one made in New York City last year, where restaurant chains that have more than 15 locations must print calories on the menus. According to an article in the British Medical Journal, this has resulted in an average reduction of 50-100 calories for each food order. Not much, but at least it's something.

In the case of pizza, a 2.2 ounce thin-crusted slice of cheese pizza could have as little as 190 calories. One slice of "meat lover's" pizza, on the other hand, could set you back almost 500 calories! If you knew the difference, would it change what kind and how much you ate?

I'm totally in favor of posting calories on menus, despite the critics who say it won't make a difference. I think anything that raises calorie awareness is going to affect behavior in a positive way and help make for better food decisions. Whether it should be mandatory by law is debatable. I say, let the restaurants decide and then let the marketplace sort itself out.

I would be more likely to recommend or support the restaurants who opted to post calories, increase their range of healthy choices… and on that rare occasion, have a CEO who actually says, "Eat my food, but not too much!!"

Now, if we can only get those Mcdonalds's execs to say the same thing!<<< Watch This Amazing Video For More Information >>>
