Eczema And The Control Of This Skin Condition

Eczema is an inflammatory, chronic, noncontagious disease of the skin caused by allergy and hypersensitivity. The term is loosely used to include many skin conditions more properly included under dermatitis. Eczema is characterized by a number of cutaneous lesions, such as macules, papules, pustules, vesicles, scales, and crusts.

Macules are nonelevated skin spots. Papules are hard, circular, and elevated. Pustules are papular like lesions that contain pus, and vesicles are small skin blisters that contain fluid. Eczematous lesions are usually accompanied by an exudation of serous fluid and by intense itching. One-third to one-half of all cutaneous conditions are eczematous.

There is no known cure for eczema, but new treatments are helping people to manage, and even prevent flares, better than ever before. Treatment is most effective when people with eczema work closely with a physician, preferably a dermatologist, who will customize a treatment approach based on the person's age, symptoms, and overall health. With the right treatment, most flares can be brought under control in less than three weeks.

In more severe cases of eczema, where other treatments have failed, systemic steroids may be used. Instead of applying the steroidal medication to the top of the skin, it is injected into the body, or taken in pill form. These medications should only be used for a short time.

Side effects can include skin damage, weakened bones, high blood sugar and/or blood pressure, infections, and cataracts. It is also dangerous to stop systemic corticosteroids abruptly, and patients must work closely with a doctor when changing doses or stopping treatment.

Antibiotics can be prescribed by a doctor to treat secondary infections associated with eczema. Medications used to fight infection can come in ointment or pill form and are taken for a set period of time.

Sedating antihistamines, which are best to take at bedtime, can help ease severe itching associated with eczema, and help restless sleepers and "scratchers" to sleep. The sedating antihistamines are more effective at relieving itching than the newer, non-sedating antihistamines, but these drugs cause drowsiness, and can affect an adult's ability to work and think, and childrens' ability to learn if taken during the day.

Phototherapy uses ultraviolet A or B light waves, and is reserved for children over 12 and adults. It is very much like a tanning bed, and, like tanning beds, can cause skin cancer if used too much, for too long. Doctors use the minimum exposure necessary to ease itching and reduce inflammation.

In severe cases of eczema that do not respond to any other treatment, an immunosuppressive drug, like cyclosporine, may be used for a short time although the safety and effectiveness of cyclosporin in children has not been clearly established by clinical trials. These drugs block the production of some of the body's immune cells and curb the effect of others. They can provide relief from very serious eczema flares, but this improvement while on the drug often does not continue after the drug course is over. Side effects include hypertension and kidney problems, nausea, tingling or numbness, headaches, and a possible increase in cancer risk.

Keeping the skin happy and healthy is the first rule of good eczema care. This includes avoiding flare triggers, and sticking to a skin care routine that keeps the skin moisturized, and minimizes itchiness. To avoid these typical treatments that can do more harm than good you can try an all natural approach to healing.

Courage and Panic Attacks

People who have never experienced a panic attack often judge the anxious person harshly.

The outsider has no real comprehension of what is happening to the person experiencing a panic attack and wonders why they fear to do the simplest things.

I know myself that I could not understand how overnight I went from being a confident young man to someone who became anxious of common everyday situations.

Going places took on a whole new dimension as I constantly evaluated if being there might trigger a panic attack.

I had to force myself to do very simple things like go to the cinema or drive in traffic. As a man that type of anxiety really erodes self confidence, as so much of male self esteem comes from being perceived as strong and brave.

…but here I was afraid to queue at the bank!

Today I know better. Through my own journey and all those I have worked with, I know now that anxiety disorders have nothing to do with a persons level of bravery.300x250 Graphics

I know this to be true because I have worked with many people from the 'bravest' professions around. Firemen, policemen, soldiers. All of them admired by others for their bravery.

Some of these individuals would actually prefer to run into a burning building than stay awake at night with a panic attack.

That sounds strange but it isn't really. In a burning building they knew what to do and how to handle the situation. During a panic attack they felt powerless and out of control.

What you have to remember is that panic attacks and general anxiety have no relationship to the level of courage an individual has. In fact it has nothing to do with the world out there, -it is a problem born out of an internal crisis.

It is easy to feel brave and fearless in the world when your internal world feels safe but when you feel those internal walls have been breached by fear, then your confidence is rocked. The danger you fear becomes internal. Your psychic foundations feel vulnerable.

That is where the crisis originates. The doubting of your ability to handle the sensations shakes your inner confidence and that is what the fear feeds off.

It is a crisis of confidence in your body and mind's ability to handle the stress. This crisis however does not stop the bravery.

People with anxiety actually do the bravest of things.

They get up each day and get on with life. Picking themselves up after each and every setback. It does not make headline news but it counts because it is real bravery, true courage.

To the untrained eye it does not seem like such a big deal to simply drive out of state, attend church, or go shopping. However for the person with anxiety, that experience can be a massive accomplishment, especially if they have tried and failed many times before.

The good news is:

This bravery does not go unrewarded.

Once the person has triumphed over their anxiety problem, they develop an inner strength that the average person never gets to develop.

You see, no matter how many brave things you do in the world, if you have not been challenged on an inner level, then you miss out on the opportunity to develop real inner strength.

That is the hidden opportunity anxiety presents to you. To become a bigger person than you already are. That is what you take from the challenge of anxiety.

It does not matter if you have not reached that point yet. The journey is unique to everyone so do not judge your progress against others.

Healthy Eating Plan vs. Dieting-Which One Do You Like?

When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, a healthy eating plan trumps dieting every time. Why? Because nutritious eating is a lifestyle change whereas dieting is short-lived. If you're torn between going on a diet and following a healthy eating plan, here are some reasons to choose the latter.

Diet Solution ProgramA Healthy Eating Plan Helps You Learn About Nutrition

Losing weight is not just about looking good in a pair of jeans; it's also about improving your overall health. Diets that suggest you drink only liquids or eliminate carbohydrates or fats are hogwash. Our bodies are fueled by the nutrients in the foods we eat. Any diet that requires you to eliminate some of the most important foods will ruin your health.

Poor nutritional health contributes to diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer and other life altering health conditions. Most of the foods marketed by manufacturers as "healthy" aren't healthy at all. Nope. Not even a little bit.

If you don't know what to look for, it's easy to believe that frozen dinners, nutritional shakes, snack bars and other processed foods are alright to eat. When you opt for a healthy eating plan instead of a "diet," you learn to make every calorie count by choosing foods that give you the best nutritional bang for your efforts.

Diets are Restrictive, Time Consuming and Confusing

Measuring food, counting calories and reading labels are time-sucks you can do without. Healthy foods are low in calories so there's no reason to measure (although you still need to eat sensibly), use charts or count calories. Seriously, who has time to do this stuff? I certainly don't, and I'm guessing you don't either.

This diet tells you to sip shakes all day. That diet tells you to do away with all fats. Another diet advises you to kick carbs to the curb. And finally, you're roped into believing that eating frozen diet meals for the rest of your life is A-O-kay. Confusing, right? Unlike a traditional diet, there is nothing restrictive or perplexing about a healthy eating plan.

When you learn which foods are actually good for you, you can use them to create healthier versions of the foods you love. Take for instance the blueberry pancake recipe I sent out in one of my newsletters. Instead of using white flour or pancake mix, the recipe creator used rolled oats and a few other healthy ingredients.

Once you learn how make nutritious meals with the foods that make you weak in the knees, you will never feel restricted in what you can eat.

A Healthy Diet Produces Long-term Results

Most diets are considered "fad diets" for a reason. They don't stick around because they are just not realistic for long-term use. I mean c'mon. How long do you think you'll be able to adhere to a juice only diet? Even if you do manage to shed a few pounds, more often than not, you'll gain the weight back.

We won't even discuss the nutritional deficiencies you may face when you follow diets that prohibit (or severely limit) carbohydrates, fats, and other essential foods. Your health is your most precious asset. Protect it at all costs. Following a healthy eating plan is the best way to enjoy permanent weight loss results without sacrificing your health.

Let the Diet Solution Program teach you how to drown out the fad diet noise so you can feel confident in your ability to lose weight for good. A healthy eating plan doesn't consist of a diet that tells you not to eat fruits and vegetables, find out why!

How To Build Muscle, Olympic Style – Part 2

In part one of this series we discussed how to build muscle like the always-jacked-big-biceps-and-triceps sporting male gymnasts. In part two we are going to address the other most muscular athletes at the summer Olympics, the sprinters. If you took a survey of most average guys I am willing to bet that 99.9% of them would choose to look like an Olympic sprinter over just about any other physique option you gave them. Lean muscular and athletic looking; what could be better than that? I would even go so far as to argue that guys like Maurice Greene and Shawn Crawford posses the perfect male physique. Head turning both aesthetically and athletically

So how do you build that kind of functional, muscular physique? Well first of all you need to train with the intention of targeting the fast twitch muscle fibers. This can be done by using heavy weights for relatively low reps and lifting explosively. Stick with compound exercises like cleans, snatches, push presses, squats and deadlifts. Always accelerate as fast as you can on the concentric, or lifting portion, of every set and control the eccentric, or lowering portion, in one to two seconds. Never waste time with slow lifting speeds, especially on the way up. That limits the amount of weight you can lift and is completely unnatural. In real life if you bent over to pick up a box, would you take four seconds to lift it up off the ground and eight seconds to put it back down?  Of course not. Muscles are made for speed; don't force them to do something they don't want to do by lifting slowly. Train slow, get slow. Remember thatMGS Banner

Another key component in learning how to build muscle like an Olympic sprinter is to be sure that you are using the right cardio/ conditioning methods. Too many people waste their time doing regular cardio like riding a bike, using a treadmill, stairclimber, or elliptical machine at a steady pace for 20-45 minutes. While this type of activity will burn some calories and can help you get leaner, it is far from the most effective or time efficient method. You don't think sprinters do that, do you? Sprinters, obviously, sprint. When you compare the sprinters physique to the marathoners physique it is readily obvious which form of activity burns the most fat, builds the most muscle and produces the most appealing physique

While excessive steady state aerobic or cardio training can actually burn muscle tissue, high intensity methods like sprinting can actually help you build muscle. You read that right; sprinting can actually have a double pronged effect of not only burning fat, but simultaneously inducing an anabolic state and helping you build muscle. I don't know about you but that makes it a hands-down winner in my book, any day

I recommend that you vary your sprint workouts between regular, flat ground sprints, hill sprints, sled sprints and Prowler sprints. Just because you are not an athlete doesn't mean you shouldn't train like one in the effort to look like one. If you are training for speed, you will need a lower volume of training, longer rest periods and probably shouldn't sprint all out more than twice per week. If you are simply training to get ripped you can sprint at differing intensities and durations 3-4 days per week. Be sure to warm up properly beforehand and then do about 15-30 minutes of intense sprinting with 30-90 second rest intervals. You could run several 40 yard sprints with a minute rest or a few 100's and then walk back as your rest interval. There are a million different options, the important thing as that you do them.

Now you know how to build muscle like an Olympic sprinter and get absolutely ripped at the same time. Get ready to start turning heads i

How to Gain Muscle Fast with the Proper Rest Intervals

My Uncle Rory from Scotland was the only guy on either side of my family who could be considered big. Neither of my parents has ever weighed more than 140 pounds and nobody on either side, except me and my brother, ever even made it past 185. But Uncle Rory was different. He was not only big, but he was massive. He also taught me quite a bit about how to gain muscle fast.

My family and I went to Uncle Rory's house for a backyard barbecue one summer day, as we had a million times before. When we arrived I went out to the garage gym looking for him and found Uncle Rory in the midst of his workout. He had just done a set of deadlifts and was pumped up to even larger proportions than normal.
"Haallo wee'yan. How ye gittin' on?"
I was set to enter high school the following month but I was still the "wee'yan" (little one) to Uncle Rory. Come to think of it, anyone was little compared to Uncle Rory.
We sat and talked for five minutes or so and he then excused himself to do another set. He banged out a set with 515 pounds for five reps and again sat down to chat some more. Four or five minutes later, he did another set. At that point he sat down to tell me a story and I assumed his workout was over. Several minutes later, and after his point was made, he did his final set of the day and began stripping the weights.

"Sorry to hold up your workout, Uncle Rory; I thought you were done."
"Ye did'nae hold up my workoot."
"Yeah, but I made you rest way longer than you're supposed to between sets."
"Then you're supposed tae? How long are ye supposed tae rest between sets?"
"I don't know; aren't you supposed to do a set and then wait a few seconds and then do another? I thought you were supposed to really be breathing hard and sweating. I didn't see you doing either."
MGS Banner
"That's rubbish, lad. That's nae how ye git big and strong. Ye need to take a good long rest between sets so ye can lift heavy weights. It's the only way to dae it. Ye can'nae lift heavy weights withoot resting properly."

"Oh. But I read something about how to gain muscle fast, and thought that to get in shape you were supposed to keep your heart rate up and keep moving for 30-60 minutes straight without resting."

"Aye, but I'm no trying tae get in shape; I'm trying tae get bloody well big and strong."

And with that, Uncle Rory delivered one of the most important points about how to gain muscle fast that I have ever learned. The weight room is the place where you get big and strong. Like Uncle Rory said; it is not the place where you "get in shape." You do that through proper diet and cardio work. Don't try to turn your workouts into marathon conditioning sessions or try to burn more calories with high-rep, low-rest nonsense. All that will do is leave you looking pathetically small and weak. While you may have seen videos of your favorite pro bodybuilders doing set after set during their pre contest preparation while only resting 30-45 seconds, I can tell you that that approach will leave you small and weak… and it won't take long to happen.

You need to rest long enough to perform high quality sets with heavy weights. That is usually somewhere between one to three minutes depending on the exercise, weight being used, how much training experience you have, what you weigh and a variety of other factors too numerous to discuss here. Heavy weights with adequate rest periods should be the main focus of your workout. If you do that you can still add in some low rest periods and higher rep, pump style training from time to time in order to get the best of both worlds.

How to Prevent a Skin Mole From Coming Back After Removal

Skin Moles do not usually come back once they have been removed. However sometimes in certain cases a skin mole may re-occur.

There are a few things you can do to try to prevent that the skin moles do not come back after removal. First it is important to heed all the advice given by your physician. It may also help however if you nurture good habits. Off course there is not a 100% formula but doing you part may help a lot.

Skin Moles have been linked to direct and indirect sunlight. Take precautions whenever you go outside, whether for a short or prolonged period. Not only does sunlight may cause skin moles, but it can increase wrinkles and other signs of aging.

The sun shines down two different types of rays. These are ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B. Both kinds are harmful to the skin and can eventually cause cancer. Tanning bends typically use ultraviolet A rays. Though these take a bit longer to do their damage, they are nonetheless harmful.

Many people associate sun damage with the summer time. However, winter sunlight can be just as dangerous. If you have ever seen someone who skis or spends time outside during the winter, you know this can be true. When there is snow on the ground, the sun's rays can reflect off of the sun causing even more damage.

When one is in the water, it reduces the sun's rays slightly. However, the protection you get is not nearly significant enough to justify no other methods of protection. Sand and water, like snow, can reflect the rays and cause more damage.

The sunlight can get to your skin through clouds and even a few feet of water. In fact, up to 80% of the sun's rays can get through clouds or water.

Since water can wash off or render sunscreen completely ineffective, it is imperative that sunscreen is applied very often. In addition, you can minimize your exposure to harmful rays by carefully planning your activities. Between 10:00 in the morning and 3:00 in the afternoon, the sun is at its strongest. Clouds or an overcast day offer no protection against these rays.

Shade can save you a lot of exposure without hampering your activities. Consider planning your activities around some natural shade or an umbrella. Covering your skin will also protect you from the sun's harm. Large hats can protect your head and neck. Long sleeves and long plants are a very effective barrier as well. Consider a light and flowing fabric to deal with the heat.

When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that are designed to block against harmful rays. Many inexpensive pairs offer no UV ray protection whatsoever. Sunglasses that do protect against these rays should have a label or some other indicator that they do protect against these rays.

As mentioned earlier, diligent application of sunscreen can protect your skin against both types of harmful rays. You should seek a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. (For those of you that have wondered, SPF stands for sun protective factor).

Do not be stingy with the sunscreen and do not be afraid to reapply often. It is rendered ineffective after some heavy sun exposure and can easily wash off in the pool or even be washed off by sweat. A good general rule is to reapply sunscreen once an hour if you are swimming or working heavily outside.

The sun can penetrate clothing, so try to take a two-pronged defense by wearing protective clothing and utilizing sunscreen. Clothing that has a very tight weave is more protective that stretchy or elastic clothing.

The sun is extremely harmful to children and most of us make sure to lair our children in sunscreen. But never forget your own skin protection as well, no matter what your age, the sun can be very harmful.

I Have Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a condition where a person will hear a constant ringing that no one else can hear. I personally have tinnitus and I wanted to share my story with you. If you are suffering from tinnitus you aren't alone, the majority of people will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives. Even famous people such as Steve Martin and Eric Clapton suffer from tinnitus, but they have learned how to manage their condition, and you can as well.

I first started noticing a ringing in my ears about five years ago. At first I didn't think much of it, but it kept going on and on. I wasn't able to find relief and it was starting to get in the way of my studies. I decided to visit my doctor to see what was going on in my head. He did an exam of my general health as well as focused on my ears and head. He confirmed that I am suffering from subjective tinnitus, where I can hear a ringing that no one else can. Back then I didn't know much at all about tinnitus, so I asked him about a cure. He let me know that there currently isn't a cure for tinnitus, but that there are numerous treatment options to help me manage the condition.

He first recommended that I make sure that my hearing doesn't get damaged any more than it already was. I needed to start avoiding situations with loud noises such as concerts and wear earplugs if I couldn't avoid them. Also I had to be careful of everyday situations that could damage my hearing, like listening to music too loudly in my headphones. I also needed to change my diet, which I have to admit was needed anyway, I wasn't taking proper care of myself. I started by cutting out excessive amounts of salt, sugar, and saturated fats. I also increased the amounts of fruits and vegetables I ate and started to take a daily vitamin. I stopped drinking soda and opted instead for at least 8 glasses of water a day.

I also found out that a number of medications, including aspirin, have tinnitus as a side effect. I sat down with my doctor and we went through the medications I was taking, and turned out that they could be leading to my tinnitus. I also went to my local health food store and picked up some supplements that are naturally supposed to help ease tinnitus like gingko biloba.

It wasn't easy at first, I'm not going to pretend that is was. I didn't see results overnight, but after a few weeks I definitely noticed a change in my tinnitus. It was a little easier to focus and to fall asleep. Little by little the intensity of my tinnitus lessened and I am happy to say that it is now to a manageable level. Now, what worked for me might not work for you. Each person's tinnitus is unique. However I want you to know that you are not alone in your suffering. There are a wide range of treatment options out there and you can find a treatment program that works for you.

One of the newer (and more effective) solutions for tinnitus that has come to surface is called Goodbye Tinnitus. This program is completely accessed online. It includes an easy to read ebook that explains everything there is to know about tinnitus. Not only are the necessary basics covered, but also all the known (an not so well known) treatment options available. The main solution discussed in this ebook is a unique 4-step treatment plan. This specific plan addresses tinnitus at its core, and from every aspect, making relief much easier to achieve compared to the typical solutions found elsewhere. Also included are dozens of tinnitus maskers, ranging from specialized noise frequencies, nature sounds, and man made sounds. From our research, Goodbye Tinnitus seems to be the most effective solution available. No other solution fights tinnitus in such a complex, yet simple and effective manner.

Butter: Good Fat or Bad Fat?

Diet Solution ProgramPeople are often shocked when they see how much butter I use and eat in one day.  But I know the real truth; Butter is a good fat and can actually help you lose weight.Unfortunately, people thinking butter is unhealthy is a very common misconception. People still think that butter and saturated fats are the reason heart disease is one of the top killers in this country (and now in many other countries as well). The truth is thatit's not the natural fats that are causing this epidemic, its the sugar, processed and packaged foods and overconsumption of refined oils that are causing so much disease (and you can add Diabetes, High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure to this list as well).

I go into this topic in much greater detail in the Fats Chapter of the Diet Solution Program but here are a few nuggets of info to ponder:

1. Did you know that during the 60 year period from 1910-1970, the proportion of traditional animal fat in the American diet declined from 83% to 62%?

2. During this same time butter consumption plummeted from 18 pounds per person each year to 4 pounds per person each year.

3. During the past 80 years, the consumption of dietary cholesterol intake has increased only one percent.

So where is the problem? Why all the heart disease?

1. During the same period, the average intake of dietary vegetable oils (margarine, shortening, and refined oils) increased by about 400%.

2. During the same period, the consumption of sugar and processed foods increased by about 60%

Those are the facts, but there's never better proof than the results I see with my clients and my readers. When people finally stop eating margarine, refined oils, "fake" butters, sugar and processed foods, their health sky rockets! (and by sky rockets I mean, gets better, greatly improves, elevates to whole new levels). Not to mention all the body fat they lose off their body (now isn't that just an awful side effect?)

It's important to mention that the butter I use is organic and grass fed. It has this beautiful deep yellow color and is not white like most conventional butters. It has gone through minimal processing and has no added growth hormones and antibiotics. I get all my butter from www.grasslandmeats.com

Now that I told you butter is ok to eat, here is a delicious chicken recipe you can enjoy:

(Please remember that the mad scientist in me sometimes forgets to document the exact amounts so you may need to play around with this a bit.)

Chicken with "I'm not afraid of butter" dressing

Ingredients:

2 large chicken breasts (approximately 1 lb of chicken)
6 Tbsp of melted butter
lemon juice from 1/2 large lemon
1/4 cup olive oil
salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste

Directions:

Melt 1 tbsp of butter in a large pan. Season chicken breasts with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Cook chicken breasts in butter covered on very low heat. Do not let the butter get brown. Pour lemon juice in a seperate bowl. Slowly stir in the remaining melted butter as you stir mixture. Then slowly add the olive oil as you stir mixture. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Once the chicken is cooked through, served on a plate and pour the "dressing mixture" over your cooked chicken breasts.

Don't be surprised if you are tempted to pour this dressing on your veggies and just about every other food item you can think of. It's delicious!

Buying Skin Whitening Products – Things You Should Know

Nowadays the market abounds in almost any type of product. Brands after brands are released and made stronger just to sell the same products, with the same recipes and same purposes. Rarely a new and revolutionary product appears and when this happens, hundreds of similar products appear in the following weeks or months. With this entire confusion and with the struggle of having the best product ever, many costumers no longer know what product to purchase in order to satisfy their needs. If the choice is easier to make when it comes to food, clothes or useful objects around the house, when it comes to skin care products the choice becomes more and more difficult as you just see the product, but are not able to see if it will work for you or not. Thus, it is mainly a trial and error experience until they find the product that will satisfy all their needs.

Yet, in order to be on the right path towards finding the product, there are some things a customer must know and take into consideration when buying skin whitening products. The first, and probably the most obvious one, is the skin type and color. The skin whitening products are made up for different types of skin, ranging from dark skin to light or yellowish skin, thus in order to find a product to work for you, it must be necessarily made for your color of skin.

There are also 3 different skin types which are applicable to all skin colors. These types of skin are dry skin, oily skin and normal skin. According to your type of skin all skin care products should be chosen, including the skin whitening products.

Another thing which should be known when purchasing skin whitening products is that some of them may contain irritant substances or even substances which may have serious side effects for people with sensitive skin or for pregnant women. A very good example in this direction is the hydroquinone, a substance which is reported to cause fetal malformations and even affect the pregnant woman. Thus, you should look carefully on the ingredients contained by that product and see whether you are allergic to one of them or if the product is safe for you.

Also, the date of production, the date of expiration as well as the number of days in which the product should be used after is opened should be written on the bottle or package of the product. This is highly important as some substances may change their properties after a certain period and if applied on skin may further increase the problems.

Skin whitening products can be found anywhere on the market. Yet, purchase your sample from a reputable pharmacy, where specialized personnel will be able to answer all your questions and give you all the information you need in order to choose well.

Celebrity Weight Gain – How Do They Do It?

Childs Play – Adults Play

In these busy times, when parents and children have schedules packed to the max, family closeness can fall by the wayside. Most of us have to make an effort to guarantee that work, school, sports, and chores don't swallow up the very relationships that make those things important.

When is the last time you played or goofed around with your child? Can you remember back that far? Many parents can't. Life has made us so serious, so focused, that we've lost the joy of the simple things, and play was one of the first to go.

But as any child instinctively knows, play is essential to life. It brightens the heart and lightens the spirit. For kids, who live closer than we do to nature, play is as spontaneous as breathing. Sadly, most grown-ups have lost that skill. Our children can be our refresher course.

Playing with your child brings you back to the present, reminds you of what matters, and slows you down long enough to smell the roses. It also connects you emotionally with your child, rebuilding the closeness that the fast-paced, boring routines of life are all too quick to strip away.

Playing together is even more important for your child than it is for you, because she needs to feel close to you to feel loved and happy. If you've neglected time together for long enough, it may appear that your child isn't interested in your attentions. She may even tell you as much. But that's just bluster, hiding the fear that you will disappoint her again if she lets herself wish for time alone with you. If you initiate playing together, and do it at frequent intervals, even the most aloof pre-teen will start to look forward to it and, in time, throw herself into the fun.

What kind of playing should you do? Pay attention to the activities your child engages in: his idea of enjoyment. If these things seem boring to you, try hanging out nearby, observing as he does them, with words that express your curiosity. You just may find you actually develop a genuine interest. If your child is a couch potato, take up your perch on the couch beside him, but after you're allowed "in," initiate some play that might be more pleasant than TV.

Think back to what you did as a child that was memorable, especially activities you did with your parents that stay with you still. Think about things that are free or cost little, that involve experiencing life together. Start a list of ideas as they come, and add any of the following that you resonate with:

Playing together is different than finding entertaining activities for your child. Play involves you, while entertainment excuses you from the picture. If you find yourself saying, "But my schedule is too busy for any of the things on that list," consider whether your schedule needs some pruning. After all, who's going to remember in 20 years if you stay late at work or not next Tuesday? But will your child ever forget the Tuesday you ride the rollercoaster together?

Closeness with a child cannot be taken for granted. Like any other relationship, it will slip away unless it's made a priority. Nothing builds trust and bonding with a child like sharing a moment of silliness and laughter. Come together for light-hearted play, and you just may find your child opens up about serious subjects. The relaxed atmosphere of play helps us let our guard down and reveal more of ourselves.

When you play together, let your child feel like the most important person in your world. Give him your undivided attention: no cell phones, no interruptions, no slipping into your own private thoughts. Be present – body, mind and spirit. Then let yourself do whatever comes naturally, with the abandon you felt when you yourself were a child. Your instincts will be your guide.

Growing closer through play is easy. It just takes dedicated moments, given on a fairly regular basis, so your child begins to count on having time with you.

Let your child re-teach you the wonderful secrets of play. You both will feel more secure and peaceful – and a whole lot happier, as the reason you do it all for, starts to come back to you.

Damage Control For Holiday Eating “Accidents” (Part 2)

It's lunchtime, and you're trying to decide what to make today. Normally, you would have your regular chicken salad with mixed nuts, but today is different. You're going to a party in the evening, and even though you're not quite sure what to expect, you know there will be a ton of food in an atmosphere of very little restraint. You decide that it's probably best to eat a lighter lunch than usual, to prepare for the evening calorie-surge.

This is commonly known as "banking calories" which is analagous to saving calories like money because you're going to consume more later.

I usually do not recommend this. Here's why:Success Story!
If you skip meals earlier in the day to "prepare" (bank calories) for a big feast at night, you are thinking only in terms of calories, but skipping meals is also depriving yourself of protein (amino acids), carbohydrates, essential fats, vitamins, minerals and other valuable nutrients that come from healthy food, as well as the small frequent meals which help control your appetite, stabilize your blood sugar and provide a steady flow of amino acids to your muscles. Skipping breakfast is especially detrimental.
Not only that, but eating less early in the day in anticipation of overeating later in the day is much more likely to increase your appetite, causing you to binge or eat even MORE than you thought you would at night when the big meal does arrive.
In fact, eating healthy, high fiber and lean protein food, as usual, earlier in the day is likely to make you LESS hungry for the holiday party meal and you'll be more likey to eat only a harmlessly small amount of "party" foods.
I dont like the concept of "banking calories" if it means skipping meals or if it's used as justification for binge eating.
Even if it worked the way you wanted it to, the starving and bingeing pattern may cause more damage than an occasional oversize meal, even if only on a psychological level. Some dieticians might even argue that this kind of behavior borders on disordered eating.
A better approach is to stay on your regular menu of healthy foods and small meals through the entire day – business as usual – and then go ahead and enjoy yourself at your party by treating yourself to a SMALL amount of "BAD" food.
This is supported by the 2nd Corollary of the law of calorie balance:
"Small amounts of ANYTHING – even junk food- will probably not be stored as fat as long as you are in a calorie deficit where you are eating fewer calories than you burn."
It should be a big relief for you to know that when you're at a party, a banquet, dining out or eating at a relative's house for a special occasion, you can eat whatever you want with little or no ill effect on body composition, as long as you respect the law of calorie balance ans as long as it is done infrequently.
However, you CANNOT starve and binge and expect not to reap negative consequences.
If you sincerely want to burn fat and be healthy, then you have to have the discipline to stick with your nutrition plan consistently and control your portion sizes.
Train hard and expect success,

Doing Cardio While Building Muscle- Part 3

Intervals
The good- intervals allow you to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time and keep your metabolism elevated long after you finish doing them.

The bad- if you are training legs two or even three times per week, you can not do intervals more than once a week without overtraining. Let me rephrase that; you can but eventually it will lead to overtraining or at the very least slow down your strength gains. You can negate this slightly by keeping your leg training volume extremely low and doing your intervals on the same day as your weight training. You can't do five to eight sets of legs two or three days a week and 30 minutes of intervals on top of it. That's a dead end road.

You also have to remember to do your intervals on your training days and not on off days like you might do with other forms of cardio because that will lead to overtraining much quicker.

The ugly- if you choose sprinting as your form of interval training you could get hurt; it's an ugly truth that has to be faced. The thing that will lead to even more injuries is following faulty interval protocol advice. Normally it is recommended to do 30-60 second intervals when they are being performed on a stationary bike. A lot of people take these recommendations and apply them to sprinting. This is a huge mistage! Nobody can sprint for 30-60 seconds. Ok, not nobody; but most average people can't do it. World class athletes can sprint for that long, but not everyone else. Animated Banner

Don't believe me?

Go try it. Warm up thoroughly and try to sprint for 60 seconds straight. Let me know what happens. We have all seen the Olympics and how winded guys are after sprinting the 100 which happens to last all of ten seconds. Most of us have seen guys run the 40 and not be able to catch their breath for at least a few minutes afterwards. And that takes five seconds or less. Not only is sprinting for 30-60 seconds impossible for most people but it also greatly increases the risk of injury.

When you keep your sprint distances and times very short, you decrease the risk for injury because you never hit top speed and instead spend most of your time in the acceleration phase. This phase has the least potential for injury. For that reason, most people should be running 20-50 yard sprints. This keeps you at top speed for a very short period of time; usually little enough time to maintain form and not suffer an injury. When you run at top speed for too long the chance for a break down in form and thus an injury is greatly increased.

I would never recommend that a non athlete ever try to sprint for 30-60 seconds straight and you should never take that advice from anyone. It is faulty and dangerous. To further reduce your injury while sprinting, use adequate rest periods between sets. Also, running with a sled slows you down enough to avoid top speeds and makes sprinting much safer.

Bottom Line- Intervals are a great tool for getting ripped, however when your main goal is to get big and strong and just keep fat gain to a minimum, they should be used sparingly if at all. I would recommend sprints above intervals on a bike and even then I wouldn't do them in true interval fashion but more of a traditional speed workout with short sprints and adequate rest periods. This will still elevate your metabolism greatly and keep you lean. Just look at the physiques of Olympic sprinters for proof of this; that his how they train. Sprint, rest… no intervals.

EZ-DipT Belt Review

Bodyweight exercises like dips and pull-ups are great for really developing the chest, triceps and back. Using just your bodyweight though, your muscles eventually adapt, making the exercise less challenging and minimizing your gains. To counter this, someone invented the dip belt, which allows you to attach weights to your body so the exercise is more challenging. Since the first dip belt arrived on the scene, things haven't really changed much-until now.

The EZ-DipT Belt-billed as the "ultimate dipping belt"-was developed by the same crew that brought us the Haulin' Hooks patented lifting straps.

And like the Haulin' Hooks, the Dip Belt is equally innovative. It features a patented never drop "E-Z load" dumbbell hook or an optional plate holder.

It's also got dual "E-Z Adjust" chain snap hooks for optimal, no swing load positioning, a multi-user waist buckle snug with a tug of the strap for zero belt slip under load and strategically placed 6mm neoprene hip cushions eliminate bruising regardless of load weight. And last but not least-it's rated for a load of up to 450 pounds.

Your typical dip belt is a wide leather or synthetic belt with a metal ring at both ends. A chain is connected to one of the rings, with a clip at the other end so that it can connect to the other ring. The idea is that you slip the belt around your waist and run the length of chain through a plate, connecting the clip-on end of the chain to the other ring. The weight swings free between your legs enabling you to do weighted dips and pull-ups. The whole process is just as simple even if you want to use the optional holder to use plates instead of a dumbbell.

EZ-DipT Belt Review

And while it sounds like a simple concept that anybody should be able to pull off without a hitch, there are some inherent problems with ordinary dip belts:

The folks at Hypertrophy Enterprises took these issues into consideration when they developed their belt. I tried it out myself and was really impressed. I like the way it feels and I especially like the fact that it's easy and simple to use.

All of my friends at the gym wanted to try it out when they got a look at it. Every one of them was equally impressed. The most common comments were:

Even my buddy who is only 5′ 4″ tall-and he's never been able to use a dip belt because they don't adapt to his small frame-was able to use the EZ-DipT without a problem.

It's really very simple to use-you just slip the belt around your waist and pull the strap to quickly adjust it to your size so it fits nice and snug. Next, you clip the free end of the chain to the metal ring-easily adjusting the length of the chain if necessary-and then drop a dumbbell into the holder. It's very easy to do without assistance and even with the dumbbell in the holder, it's easy to walk and get into the proper position. And since you can adjust the amount of swing by using more or less chain, you reduce the likelihood of injury by a wide margin.

After using the belt several times, I decided that the EZ-DipT should be a "must-have" if you're in the market for a dip belt. It is far superior to most ordinary belts. And even better, it's not really any more expensive than any high quality belt. This is definitely a worthwhile investment that will pay off in bigger, stronger muscles.

With all of the different treatment options available there is something that should work for anyone. Most find the best relief by combining different treatment options into an overall treatment plan. Some treatment options have proven to be more successful than others though.

Maskers are one of the safest treatment methods. The point of a masker is to drown out the sound of the tinnitus so it is less noticeable. Have You Ever Considered a Starvation Diet Plan for Weight Loss?

Diet Solution ProgramThe less food you eat, the more weight you'll lose, right? Sorry, but it just doesn't work this way. If your idea of the perfect diet plan for weight loss is popping crackers and diuretics, you're headed for disaster. Besides being downright miserable, a starvation diet can thwart your weight loss efforts and do some serious damage to your health.

Starving Slows the Fat Burning Process

Your body relies on the nutrients in food (real food, not saltines) for fuel. When you starve yourself, it senses the downward shift in your caloric intake and kicks into starvation mode. When this happens, your metabolism will slow down and your body will hold on to stored fat in order to conserve energy.

Lean muscle mass needs more energy to function than fat. Basically, the more lean muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn. If you continue to starve yourself, your body will feed on your lean muscle tissue and make it even harder for you to lose weight.

Obviously, if you starve yourself long enough, you'll have no choice but to lose weight. But the weight loss won't be healthy, and it will show in your appearance. You'll become emaciated and your body will start to look like an old bag of bones (not joking).

Starvation Diet Results Are Short-Lived

The weight lost from starvation diets almost always comes back. Starvation slows your metabolism down. And it can take months for it to return to normal. As soon as you start eating again, you'll likely gain all of the weight you lost back, plus a few extra pounds. In the end, you'll wind up bigger than you were before you started starving.

Starving Can Damage Your Health

When you go without food, you don't get any of the essential nutrients needed for good health. This can result in fatigue, kidney failure, heart failure, gallstones, ulcers, hair loss, muscle weakness and osteoporosis. This is just a short list of the physical problems a starvation diet can cause. We haven't even touched on the mental stuff yet.

It's not uncommon for extremely calorie-restrictive dieters to struggle with depression, anger, indifference, memory loss, poor concentration, hallucinations and mood swings. Starvation can also increase your chances of suffering with eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia.

In essence, your health will be a mess if you try to lose weight by starving. The worst part about it is that some of the health issues that arise from starvation diets can cause irreversible damage to your body and require long-term hospitalization or lifelong medical care.

I'm not trying to scare you, but if you plan to turn starvation into a lifestyle, you'll end up in a body bag way before your time. No amount of skinny is worth your life.

Don't let the desperation to lose weight push you to go on a starvation diet. This type of diet can destroy your health and make weight loss harder to achieve. The healthiest way to drop unwanted pounds is to eat right, manage portion sizes and exercise.

Let The Diet Solution Program show you how a sensible diet plan for weight loss can work for you.

How Ace Inhibitors Work to Lower Blood Pressure

Blood pressure medications come in different forms and each is intended to cause a different reaction in the blood or blood vessels. An ace inhibitor is one such medication used in the treatment of hypertension.

Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors prevent the manufacture of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II makes blood vessels narrower. When the hormone production is blocked, the arteries remain wider and allow blood to flow through with less pressure on the vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure.

Brand Names for Ace Inhibitors

Benazepril, Enalapril and Lisinopril are three ACE inhibitors commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure. They are seldom the first course of action but are used to treat the more severe cases of hypertension. Ideally, maintaining a proper weight and eating right are the best ways to control blood pressure. After that a diuretic type of medication may be prescribed, which works based on the idea of flushing the arteries so pressure is reduced.

The brand names under which the common ACE inhibitors used to treat high blood pressure are sold are Lotensin (benazepril), Vasotec (enalapril) and Prinivil and Zestril (lisinopril). All of these work to increase blood flow by keeping the arteries open and wide.

ACE inhibitors have side effects just like any other drugs. It can feel as if you have a bad cold because many of the symptoms that are possible are a cough, sore throat, fever, and mouth sores. Other symptoms include an itchy, red skin rash, swelling of the neck, face or tongue, or a salty or metallic taste in your mouth. While all of these are not extremely common, they have been reported in enough cases to be listed as possible side effects to taking ACE inhibitors.

One side effect is raised potassium levels. Some medications, such as diuretics, actually reduce potassium and that has some health risks with it as well. The opposite is true of ACE inhibitors. Because they can raise potassium levels it is important to have yours monitored if you are taking any of these prescriptions. Symptoms of too much potassium in the blood stream include nervousness, a numbness or tingling feeling in the hands or feet, and even confusion. There can also be difficulty breathing.

It is important to watch what you eat and what you do while taking ACE inhibitors. Some foods which contain potassium, such as salt substitutes can cause you to have dangerously high levels of potassium. Also, taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve or aspirin can negate the effects of your ACE inhibitor drug.

The challenge in controlling blood pressure with medicine is two-fold. Medical professionals will try the least invasive type of drug, meaning one with the least chance of side effects and that requires the lowest dose possible to manage your blood pressure. This means that a patient can often go through years of trial and error type of drug experimentation before finding something that works. Meanwhile, blood pressure can be going untreated.

Secondly, medications to treat blood pressure have side effects – all of them to some degree. You may find that using them requires you to take other medications to treat the symptoms of the side effects.

As with any disease or condition, a natural approach can be just as effective, without the risk of side effects. A doctor can help you determine if you need to lose weight or make other changes to control your blood pressure.

Discover how you can lower blood pressure safely and naturally without the risk of harmful drug side effects:

How to Care For Your C Section Incision to Avoid Serious C Section Complications

The key to assisting your C section incision to repair quickly and avoid any C section complications is by monitoring and checking it on a regular basis, every few hours is ideal. Your C section incision will take some time to heal completely. Some women report that they feel no pain or discomfort and that the scar healed within a few weeks whereas others aren't so fortunate and complain of pain and C section complications many months later.

It is certainly true that you can help to speed up your C section incision recovery by taking some simple precautions and being vigilant over monitoring its condition. The staff will check on you whilst in hospital to make sure that everything is going well and immediately following the operation your C section incision scar will be covered by a sterile dressing to help guard against infection. You will also normally have been given antibiotics.

During the first 24 – 48 hours the hospital staff will probably encourage you to shower and they will then remove your dressing. After you have had your first shower, you should gently pat dry the wound with a clean towel. It is best If you can allow the area to dry uncovered for a few minutes.

One of the best ways to protect the wound over the top of the dressing is to place a sanitary pad over the top which can be attached to your clothing over the area using the stickers. You can also help to avoid any rubbing or chafing over the scar by wearing boxer shorts or oversized underwear because this will avoid the elastic waistband pulling over the scar area as the scar will be in the exact place where the waistband sits. This should be much more comfortable than your normal underwear for the first few weeks.

As the wound starts its healing process it is quite normal to notice a little spot bleeding, whilst the wound shouldn't break open or tear apart, a little bit of spotting isn't usually too much of a problem.Do not apply any creams over the scar other than an antibiotic cream until your incision has completely healed.

The best way to avoid any C section complications is to keep your incision clean and protected at all times. Wash it by using a slightly soapy wet cloth or sponge (use unperfumed soap), squeezing it over your stomach above the wound so that the soapy water runs down over the stitches. Don't directly rub the scar because this could disrupt the scab that is forming.

Whilst you shouldn't panic at the slightest change in the shape, size or condition of your C section incision it is important to be aware of any differences. If you do see anything out of the ordinary, then keep an eye on it and if it continues to deteriorate then speak to your doctor or healthcare advisor.

How to Make (or Order) a Healthy “Lean-Body Margarita”

I'm sure you know that most Margaritas are a disaster for your body… some popular Margaritas can have as much as 500 calories, mostly from all of the sugar or high fructose corn syrup in the sour mix used or from added agave syrups that are added many times.healthier margarita

Remember from a few of my past articles, while I don't advocate getting full blown drunk if you want to have a lean and healthy body, I also want to be realistic and know that most people have no desire to give up drinking altogether… and I believe it can be perfectly healthy to have a few drinks a couple times week.

In fact, some studies even show moderate drinking of alcohol (1-2 drinks a day 3-4 days a week) can possibly extend lifespan and improve health.

Personally, I love red wine and I've also been enjoying my own version of a "lean-body Margarita" recently.

If you want to be lean, a typical Margarita when you're having a couple drinks with friends is one of the WORST things you can order, and all of that sugar or corn syrup is going to do nothing but go straight to your belly flab.

But there is a way to enjoy delicious Margaritas WITHOUT all of the sugar or corn syrup…

First, how to order a low-sugar healthier margarita at a bar

If you're ordering at a bar, make sure the bartender is 100% clear that you don't want any sour mix in your margarita. Make sure they don't add any agave nectar either, as that is just pure sugar as well.  There's nothing healthy about agave nectar despite the healthy sounding name.  Just tell them you want nothing but tequila, a little triple sec or cointreau, and a little club soda.  And then you want 5 or 6 (or more) lime wedges to squeeze into the drink.  I'll usually use a whole lime if they can give it to me.

This modified margarita has very little sugar and even has the health benefits of the fresh limes too.  You can easily save 400 calories on this compared to just ordering one of the standard Margaritas off of a typical menu that is loaded with sugar.

Now, if you want to go one step further, here is my Super-Human Margarita recipe I've been playing with lately… this may sound weird, but I've honestly had at least a dozen friends try this and every single one of them LOVED this margarita recipe!

Geary's Super-Human Margarita Recipe

Into a glass, mix:

Mix all of these with a spoon in an ice filled glass…. and voila, you've got about the healthiest mixed drink that's possible!  and delicious too!

By adding the Superfoods-Cocktail mix (that's what I call it), even though this has about 76 superfood ingredients like greens, probiotics, exotic mushrooms, enzymes, etc, it also has a nice fruity sweet flavor (with no added sugar) that goes perfectly with a Margarita.

I think you'll be shocked how delicious this is!  All of my friends I've made this for loved it.

Remember that heavy drinking will definitely hurt your efforts for a lean and healthy body, but 1-2 drinks a couple days a week I think can actually be a healthy part of your plan.  Drink responsibly, and make it a healthy drink!

Hypnotherapy for Tinnitus

Does hypnotherapy really work? A lot of people will ask this question because there is a great deal of mystery about it. Conventional physicians often scorn at those who practice hypnotherapy, but there are those who vouch about the positives. So whom do you believe?

Did you know that even the conventional medical science is today looking at hypnotherapy for an answer to various illnesses? Yes, that's true. Psychiatrists and psychologists are now increasingly turning to hypnotherapy to reach into the mind of the patient. They are beginning to believe that since the mind can control the body, it can be retrained to heal a condition. If nothing else, the mind can be trained to stay positive, and a positive attitude often helps in treatment.

What About Tinnitus – Can Hypnotherapy Help Here?

Hypnotherapy can actually work very well for tinnitus. This is because some of the noises a person hears can actually be no noises at all. They are just phantom sounds. It is actually the perception of hearing them that bothers the person – there's absolutely no physical source of these noises. So hypnotherapy can work by retraining the mind to ensure that the person stops hearing them. The results could be amazing really. It has been reported that as many as 50% to 76% of all tinnitus sufferers can get relief after just a few hypnotherapy sessions. In some people, the noises go away completely, and in others, the volume goes down considerably.

The Problem with Hypnotherapy Is the Myth about It

In reality, most people do not understand hypnotherapy, and how it works. And they are often misguided by the hypnosis sessions that are shown on television. Here the therapist will put a person to sleep and order him/her to do all kinds of funny things. Of course no one wants to be completely vulnerable to the whims of the therapist, and thus, hypnotherapy has never really become a main-stream cure.

What Really Happens In a Hypnosis Session?

A real life hypnosis session is much different than what is shown on television. Here the therapist will first put the person to a completely relaxed state. Once this is achieved, the therapist chooses from several cures such as regression therapy, ego state therapy and suggestive therapy. A single session might not give you the results, but take a few of them, and you can certainly notice a difference.

Hypnotherapy enhances self-consciousness, and this lets the person concentrate better. This is known as the alpha state. When the person is able to achieve this, he/she can recall the memory and retrain the brain to break the memory loop of sound that causes the tinnitus sounds.

Never underestimate the power of your brain. It has the ability to block off most of the things we see or hear everyday. If the brain couldn't do this, then we would have to evaluate or analyze everything we see and hear. But that's not what happens. This is because the brain prioritizes things and lets us get on with our daily lives.

Especially when tinnitus is not directly related to a risky physical health condition, using the correct manipulation, hypnotherapy can decrease our awareness to the sounds of tinnitus.

Moreover, hypnotherapy can significantly contribute to relaxation and distress the patient and there are some manifestations of tinnitus that are almost directly related to a prolong state of anxiety and stress or are intensified by it.

Hypnotherapy can provide some relief from tinnitus. It can reduce or temporarily make the sounds go. But remember, the sound is just a symptom. It is best that you try to cure the root causes, instead of turning to symptomatic treatments such as hypnotherapy.

The only way you could ever get rid of your tinnitus for good is by following the holistic approach to healing. By using a multidimensional treatment for tinnitus, we are tackling all tinnitus causative factors and eliminating these triggering elements from the root. This is the only path for permanent freedom from tinnitus.

Is Milk really Healthy?

Diet Solution ProgramIs milk really necessary for an effective weight loss plan?  Do we have to drink our milk each day to get a sufficient amount of calcium?

The answer to both of these questions is NO.  We do not need to drink milk as part of a healthy weight loss plan or to obtain a healthy amount of calcium each day.

Consider the following facts:

1. Americans drink the most milk of any other country, yet we still have the highest rate of osteoporosis.

2. Pasteurization kills off all the necessary digestive enzymes in the milk (This is why so many people are now suffering from lactose intolerance).

3. Pasteurization also makes the major part of the calcium contained in milk insoluble, in other words making 50% of milk's calcium unusable by the body (This contributing to the high rate of osteoporosis).

4. Milk sugar (lactose) converts into sugar your body uses very quickly, leading to blood sugar highs and lows and an up and down energy rollercoaster ride for you.

How could this all be true? Isn't milk supposed to do a body good? Well, yes it does, but milk was really only intended to be consumed in its natural state (unpasteurized). Sound scary? Many states in the US and most organic farmers will ONLY drink milk if it's unpasteurized and they are extremely healthy.

The other fact we need to consider is that most cows are being given an excess of growth hormone just to keep them producing massive amounts of milk. This, in turn, makes them sick, at which time they are given antibiotics. The growth hormone and antibiotics get into their blood stream and then into the milk they produce. Who drinks this chemical laden milk? We do! (Actually, I don't and maybe you're starting to consider whether you do).

The next big concern is "How will I get enough Calcium?" As mentioned above, most of the Calcium in milk is not absorbed by the body. More calcium is absorbed from foods such as green leafy vegetables, broccoli, sardines (with bones preferably) and salmon. This makes sense that more calcium come from greens since cows preferably eat grass and they have a lot of calcium inside their bodies (Please don't eat grass. This really only works for cows).

If reducing your risk for Osteoporosis is your goal, do the #1 activity that prevents this debilitating disease: Exercise! Weight bearing exercise has been shown to be the #1 way to prevent osteoporosis. Putting small stresses on your bones via strength training helps to re-build them stronger. No one, and I mean no one, should be neglecting some exercise into their life.

Here are my tips on drinking the right kind of milk, calcium and preventing osteoporosis:

1. If you consume dairy on a regular basis, try to find raw (unpasteurized) milk. www.realmilk.com is a great resource for this.

2. If the thought of raw milk scares you, purchase the next best thing: certified organic milk products. They will be free of antibiotics and hormones.

3. Since most of milk's calcium is not absorbed by the body, make sure to get your calcium from these other sources: leafy green veggies, broccoli, sardines (with bones) and salmon.

4. Commit to a strength training routine on a consistent basis. Not just for your muscles and for the way you look in the mirror (although this does help) but for your bone's sake.

Milk and dairy do not have to be a staple in your diet in order to absorb adequate amounts of calcium and achieve an ideal level of health.  You can establish and extremely healthy way of eating, reach your weight loss goals, and feel great each day without drinking milk.
